Being among the urban poor can make you age faster

As we continue our exploration of childhood poverty in Colorado, a new study caught our attention: If you’re among the urban poor, and from certain racial and ethnic backgrounds, the chances are you may be aging faster at the cellular level because of the stress related to your circumstances.

That’s the conclusion reached in new research from the Stanford Center for Advanced Study by a group including Nobel laureate Dr. Arline Geronimus. It’s called Race-Ethnicity, Poverty, Urban Stressors, and Telomere Length in a Detroit Community-based Sample

“There are effects of living in high-poverty, racially segregated neighborhoods — the life experiences people have, the physical exposures, a whole range of things — that are just not good for your health,” Geronimus said in an interview with The Huffington Post.
